Satan - Lesson 1

PDF Version

Introduction:

When I was a child, I would watch a cartoon called G.I. Joe. In this cartoon, they had a saying that went something like this “Knowing is half the battle”. During the time that I’m up here, I want to discuss a topic that’s not brought up a great deal of the time in the church or even in everyday conversations. I’m sure you already know who I’m talking about, but before we discuss who we’re going to talk about I’ve got to more things I want to bring up.

During paint ball challenges, the things I want to know are who I’m up against, how many, what type of guns do they have, how much experience do they have, and how can I win?

Why did Appalachian State beat Michigan in college football?

This very moment there is a war going on. I’m not talking about a physical or political war, but a spiritual war. Now this is the thing, in order to even stand a chance in this war we need to expose our enemy. The 1st thing I want to point out is in no way am I doing this study to praise or support Satan. I want all of us to understand and point out how deceiving, deceptive, twisted and cruel Satan truly is and how he wants to destroy everything that is good and Godly including us. The devil does exist and the Bible gives an account of that. The Bible gives 175 references under a variety of names for Satan. There are seven O.T. books that mention Satan and all the N.T. books mentions Satan. Christ makes at least 15 different references under 5 names for Satan.

There are four things that need to be pointed out about Satan.

  1. He committed the 1st sin.

    1. John 3:8 says He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning.

    2. Isaiah 14:12-14 tells us about the 1st sin committed.

  2. Where did Satan come from?

    1. Did God create the devil?

      • Lucifer is Satan’s real name (Isaiah 14:12) The Hebrew word for Lucifer is Heylel which means brightness.

      • Lucifer was an angel that lived in heaven. Job 38:4-7 tells us angels were present when the earth was created.

      • God did not create the devil. God created Lucifer and the angels to worship Him.

      • God is holy and cannot be the author of sin.

      • Sin isn’t eternal. It came into existence in time.

      • God saw it fit in His eternal wisdom to permit sin to come into being.

      • Now if Lucifer was holy and good, how did he become Satan?

    2. What is his appearance?

      • Ezekiel gives a description of him. (Ezekiel 28:11-14)

      • Perfect in beauty (Ezekiel 28:12)

      • Full of wisdom (Ezekiel 28:12)

      • Perfect in his ways (Ezekiel 28:15)

      • 2 Corth 11:14

    3. What was his position in Heaven?

      • As “the anointed cherub that covereth” (or protected), he was apparently God’s highest and finest created being (Ezekiel 28:13,14)

      • Many times in the Old Testament, anointing belonged to kings, priests, and prophets. Satan possibly filled this type of position in heaven.

      • Every precious stone for a covering (Ezekiel 28:13) same as a High priest’s breastplate)

      • He had his own sanctuaries (Ezekiel 28:18)

      • Isaiah 14:12-13 says Lucifer had his own throne which shows he had some type of kingly aspect.

      • Ezekiel 14:16 and 18 talks about his tradings.

      • He was the middle angel. He took the praises of God and delivered them to Him.

      • He wanted the praises that God was receiving.

      • All the angels took their orders from Lucifer as God’s chief administrator. Now he desires the absolute rule over all angelic beings.

    4. Where did Satan come from?

      • 1 Timothy 3:5-6 (note on pride)

      • Pride is what converted Satan (Isaiah 14:12-14 and Ezekiel 28: 15-17)

      • Selfish ambition or self assertion.

      • The five “I wills”.

      • Satan’s still wise and beautiful but his wisdom is corrupt and his beauty is blemished because of his pride.

      • He’s brilliantly stupid and hideously beautiful.

  3. What are his characteristics?

    1. Because of his fall, his character became corrupted. He is no long known as Lucifer the shining one but as Satan the adversary, enemy, or hater.

    2. His power became perverted.

    3. 2 Corinth 11: 13-15 examples.

    4. Satan is not against religion. He wants to be like God.

    5. Titles given to him in the Bible.

      • Satan (52 times)

      • Devil (35 times)

      • Great Dragon.

      • Serpent.

      • Evil One.

      • The god of this age.

      • The prince of this world, demons, and power of the air.

    6. Some of his characteristics.

      • More subtle than any beast of the field.

      • Angel of light.

      • Wiles

      • Snares

      • Devices

      • Liar

      • Murder

      • Accuser of the brethren

      • Tempter

      • Destroyer

  4. Where does Satan live?

    1. Many believe hell is a place where Satan is in charge. Hell was designed for Satan and his angels to spend all eternity because of the sin they committed. Rev 20:10

    2. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us Satan is a roaring lion
